PRESERVING THE ART OF BAGRU BLOCK PRINTING

STUDIO BAGRU

The Story of Studio Bagru

Bagru Studio is a studio dedicated to block printing in both traditional and local Bagru techniques supporting artisans in this craft and connecting them to the International market through the production of textiles.

Bagru

Bagru is a small Indian town located thirty kilometers outside of Jaipur – the capital of Rajasthan. Artisans have been hand printing fabrics with wooden blocks here for over 350 years. While many Rajasthani villages have turned to screen-printing as an alternative to block printing, Bagru has remained loyal to its history, culture, and craftsmanship. This makes it one of the last existing hubs for this niche process.

Bagru Prints

Bagru prints are distinguished by motifs of larger sizes and strong lines & use red, black & grey colours from the use of natural dyes such as: madder and alum (red), iron filings, jaggery and gum (black) and Kashish (grey, khaki and brown).

Co-Creating

On our recent visit to India, we wanted to discover different styles and designs in the block print technique. We attended a workshop with Studio Bagru as we had heard a lot about the famous Bagru prints.

On seeing the Bagru designs, we naturally fell in love and have started our collaboration by printing Bagru patterns for our newest block print styles. We have plans to start our homeware collection using Bagru prints as well as many more exciting new ideas - more to come!
